Acne and Blemish-prone Skin

Blemishes are created when dead skin cells mixed with excess sebum create a plug and block hair follicles. Sebum is an oily substance produced from the sebaceous glands that are attached to these hair follicles. The production of excess sebum also creates a favorable environment for Cutibacterium acne – a type of bacteria commonly found under the skin-, to grow and cause inflammation.

What are the common causes of blemished skin?

  • Stress, pollution, overwork, in addition to an unbalanced diet rich in unhealthy fats and refined sugar can alter hormonal secretions and increase inflammation.
  • A hormonal imbalance, most often during adolescence, per-menopause or menopause can cause acne breakouts or an increase in the number of lesions. This disruption is due to the increase in androgen hormones which stimulate the sebaceous glands and therefore increases sebum production.
  • Lack of sleep and stress are also factors that promote acne. In fact, stress causes the secretion of hormones (cortisol) which can worsen acne.
  • Anything that can cause skin irritation such as cosmetic products containing alcohol and silicone can also result in clogging of the pores.
  • Make-up that is not based on natural products.
  • Skin exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Inadequate skin cleaning: certain drugs called corticosteroids can cause an acne-like skin disorder.

Enlarged Pores Skin

What is an enlarged pore?

A pore is a tiny hole that allows the excretion of sebum and sweat. A dilated pore is therefore completely open. It is located on the face, on the cheeks, around the nose and especially on the T zone, where the sebaceous glands are the most numerous, and therefore produce the most sebum.

Difference between enlarged pores and blackheads

Do not confuse enlarged pores with blackheads. When the pore channels are opened, impurities will lodge there and clog them. The pore is hence completely blocked, resulting in the formation of blackheads.

Causes of enlarged pores

  1. Poor habits and products
    • Poor skin cleaning habits.
    • The use of comedogenic products that do not allow the epidermis to breathe properly.
  2. Aging of the skinLarge pores are natural and can increase with age. Thus with time, the skin loses its elasticity as the sebaceous glands continue to produce sebum. The pore widens because the entire structure around it collapses.
  3. External aggressionsTobacco and UV rays are two factors that worsen the dilation of the pores. Again, the loss of elasticity in the skin will create large pores.

Dull Complexion, Blotchy Skin (Hyperpigmentation)

Dull Complexion Causes

A dull and tired complexion can be caused by many factors such as lack of sleep, cold temperatures, unbalanced diet, stress or hormonal imbalance. More specifically, it is the quality of your skin that is altered because of dead cells and impurities, which accumulate over time.

Blotchy skin (or Hyperpigmentation) Causes

Excessive sun exposure is the main cause of hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, melanin production is a defense mechanism against sun rays. It should also be noted that, during sun exposure, a number of perfumes and medications can cause the appearance of brown spots.

In dark-haired (dark-skinned) women, hormonal changes can cause brown blotches called โ€œmelasmaโ€ to appear on the face. They are also known as “masks of pregnancy “.

Wrinkles and Anti-ageing

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are the most obvious manifestation of skin aging and form mainly on the face, neck and upper chest. These are particularly fragile areas due to sun exposure.

Causes

Many factors can cause wrinkles. Natural aging and sun exposure are the two most prevalent ones. Wrinkles are the result of a combination of internal and external aging factors.

Internal factors of skin aging

  • Natural cellular aging, which is usually genetically determined.
  • Oxidative stress: our cells are constant preys to oxidative attacks from free radicals.
  • Hormonal aging: The decrease in estrogen secretion is associated with a decrease in collagen and elastin production.

External factors of skin aging

The sun: The harmful effects of excessive sun exposure are now widely recognized: UV rays slow down the production of elastin in the dermis, and weaken the cells of the epidermis.

Tobacco: The toxic products contained in cigarettes break down certain components of the dermis, especially hyaluronic acid.

Atmospheric pollution: It accelerates skin aging by reducing its immune system.

Stress: It increases the production of free radicals, responsible for the premature aging of cells.

Lack of hydration: Skin dehydration is an important factor in the appearance of wrinkles.

Lack of sleep: It accelerates skin aging the same way stress does.
